Welcome back to Day 2 of a biblical look on essential oils. Before we get to our next oil lets take a deeper look at where essential oils all began, with creation of course!
Plants are not only important for our planet, they are connected to the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of people since the beginning.
Ezekiel 47:12: “Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.
Here is the creation story:
Day 1- God created light and darkness
Day 2- God created the sky
Day 3-God created land, water and vegetation (plants, herbs,
Day 4- God created sun, moon, and stars
Day 5- God created sea animals and birds
Day 6- God created land animals and man
Day 7- God rested
I found it extremely interesting that God created all of these aspects of Earth before he created us, as if he was laying the foundation for humans to survive in this world he had just so intimately made.
Ponder this today during your quiet time… Everything was made with a purpose.
Now that we know some more history, let’s get oily!
Today we are going to talk about the second most famous essential oil… Frankincense!
This earthy smelling oil has always been at the top of my favorite list. With its endless health and skin benefits to its rich history, what’s not to love!
Frankincense is mentioned 22 times directly in the bible and 59 times indirectly. Some other verse where you will find Frankincense mentioned are:
-Leviticus 2: 1-2
-Leviticus 2: 15-16
-Leviticus 5: 11
-Leviticus 6: 15
-Leviticus 24: 7
-1 Chronicles 9: 29
-Nehemiah 13: 9
-The Song of Solomon 3: 6
-The Song of Solomon 4: 6
-The Song of Solomon 4: 14
-Revelations 18: 13
Frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it. Hints: why it was given to baby Jesus upon his birth!
The oil is extracted from the Boswellia (“Bos-WELL-ey-ah”) tree. The tree needs to be at least 40 years old before you can extract 1 drop of oil from it. In Biblical times, 40 years was very significant as it symbolized one generation. It also grows in the toughest conditions, even in dry soil and usually in rocks. This is why it is a little more on the pricey side:)
My favorite use:
-apply one drop to my neck and face after washing
-applying it to the bottom of my families feet to enhance respiratory health
Check out tomorrow’s post and learn more history and uses for these amazing oils!
